Chowan County Tax Department

The Chowan County Tax Department lists, assesses, and collects taxes on all real and personal property, including improvements made to real property, untagged vehicles, and vehicles with permanent tags. In addition to tax collection, the Tax Department also collects monies for the three drainage districts and fire districts as well as list, bill, and collect taxes for the Town of Edenton. The Chowan County Tax Department also collects Occupancy Taxes from short term rentals such as hotels, bed and breakfasts, Airbnb rentals, VRBO rentals, and any other short term rental units. * To learn more about Occupancy Tax, what it is, how it is collected, and how to set up your account with our office, please see the "I Want To" section on this page.
A majority of Chowan County's general fund comes from property taxes generated through the assessment of real estate, personal property, and motor vehicles. Property owners each pay a share of the cost of County services by paying taxes proportional to the value of their property. Property taxes are based on the assessed value of land, buildings, and personal property.
