Mission and Responsibilities
The Chowan County Land Records office maintains the County's property maps and Land Records. We also:
- Provide a centralized office with computer terminals for public use with access to all real estate records and the County's website
- Interpret and plot land descriptions from deed and surveys to transfer to county hard copy and digital maps.
- Change all ownership information according to all Deed Transfers and keep all such information updated on the county computer for the tax office, general public etc.
- Maintain soils database for land parcels.
- Assign all house numbers to new residents.
- Maintain a road database and name all new roads created by subdivisions.
- Assist attorneys, realtors, and the general public with problems and questions concerning real estate.
- Work on any special projects that might arise for the County Manager, Town Manager, Chamber of Commerce, and others.
Upon completion of the Geographic Information System (GIS) project, the Land Records Office now has digital property maps and various layers of information available on the county's website and public access terminals within the Land Records Office.
