In August 28, 2006, pursuant to Section 2 Session Law 2006-129, House Bill 1269, the Chowan County Board of Commissioners established the Chowan County Tourism Development Authority.

The Chowan Tourism Development Authority consist of nine (9) members each appointed by the Chowan County Board of Commissioners. Additionally the County Manager, Town Manager, County Finance Officer, and Clerk to the Board of Commissioners serve ex-officio.
