Mission and Responsibilities

The Building Inspections Staff reviews plans and inspects new construction, repairs, alterations and maintenance of residential and commercial buildings and other structures to ensure compliance with the International Building Code, as required by the State of North Carolina. Activities also include the enforcement of the Town of Edenton minimum housing code, Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) permits and exemptions, the enforcement of Flood Plain Regulations, and the issuance of building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing permits.

The Planning Staff provides support to the Chowan County Planning Board and Chowan County Board of Adjustment. Responsibilities include the development, coordination and management of land development and management of land development plans and programs. Activities include long-range and current planning of land use controls.
